Slow travel is a state of mind that emphasizes a closer connection to all aspects of one’s travel experience. Advocates of this trend point out that French writer Théophile Gautier wasn’t impressed by what he considered to be the modern fashion of speedy travel. Writing in Wanderings in Spain in 1843 he states: “In a diligence [coach] a man is no longer a man, he is but an inert object, a bale of goods, and does not differ from his portmanteau. He is thrown from one place to the other and might as well stop at home…. one of the great misfortunes of modern life is the want of any sudden surprise and the absence of all adventures.”

Slow travel can actually be seen as part of a worldwide trend towards slower living. There is a movement known as slow food which started in Italy in the 1980s as a reaction to fast food (the idea is that by taking time to enjoy your meals you can connect to the local people and culture.) There are also modern movements towards slow education, slow art and slow parenting. Slow travel has taken its place in the public consciousness as a reaction against the idea that quicker is necessarily better.

Slow travel can be less stressful because there are no set agendas and schedules to obey. It is more respectful to the communities you plan to visit because you blend in with the locals and live the way they do for while.

This is an excellent opportunity to  talk to locals and find out the points of interest from their perspective. Take a language or cooking course, study Buddhism…

Slow travel is comfortable ! Even more so if you have your own home where you can spread out.

You may even save some money on your travel budget by indulging in more of the simple pleasures that your environment has to offer and having the time to make informed decisions on how and when you want to eat and drink and shop.

A good way to explore your environment is to think of your region as a series of concentric circles. Take time to discover the local environment that is closest to your temporary home, and then branch out further afield. This can be much more rewarding than dashing out on day trips to a specific site just to say that you had “been there”. Instead of hopping around on an airplane or battling traffic in a rental car, try exploring by foot or on bicycle.

Slow travel will also give you the opportunity to get to know regional cuisine. Stopping for food on the way to a tourist location tends to limit your possibilities. Imagine being able to take the time to eat like locals! And slowing down provides an opportunity to overcome language and cultural barriers.

A great way to experience slow travel is to forego the usual hotels and bed and breakfasts and choose a vacation rental.

The largest setback in Charming Hideaways’ eight year history came in the form of an Act of God : volcanic ash billowing high in the atmosphere terminated flights to and from Europe’s largest airports.

Although we can all recognize that these incidents are few and far between, we would nevertheless like to remind you again that although travel insurance is not mandatory it is a good thing to have. As outlined in our FAQ page, a good travel insurance may help you recover part of the money paid towards your vacation rental in London or Paris if your trip was interrupted, delayed or cancelled.

Please remember that over the next week, it is advisable to check the status of your flight with your airline. We also recommend that your find out about their policy concerning this situation. Some companies like Air Canada offer the possibility to refund or reschedule your trip immediately or keep the ticket and rebook dates at a later date giving you time to think it over before rescheduling.

Bringing your dog to France is much less of an inconvenience than in many other countries. Nevertheless, if you are considering bringing your dog to Paris for a vacation, these points should be on your travel checklist.

For excellent advice and information before you leave, visit Paris Anglo for Information on the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), the European Pet Passport and traveling with your pet to or from France.

Dogs between one month and one year of age need to have a rabies shot before departure. A visit to your veterinarian is essential and must be done no sooner than one week before you leave.

Air France is a good option when traveling with dogs. They will allow dogs under 4kg in the cabin but any larger dogs are put in the hold.

European dogs now have pet passports that make travel document identification somewhat easier, but US pets will be expected to have a microchip or a tattoo. Microchips can be purchased at pet stores and you will need to have your veterinarian implant it.

Unlike some countries France has no quarantine.

There is no question that traveling with a dog to Paris can be an expensive endeavor. The hotels most likely to welcome your four-legged friend tend to be on the higher end of the scale. For a good accommodation alternative, consider staying at a fully equipped Paris apartment. It will be much more suitable for an animal than a cramped hotel suite. Paris Hideaways offers some apartments that are specifically pet friendly. It is important to let the agency know that you are traveling with your dog.

The Paris palaces will be happy to provide the very best canine accommodations for a very spoiled and devoted best friend.

A psychologist is available ”to help you understand and better communicate with your dog” and an agility course in the gardens is offered. The Trianon’s dog services may be the most extensive in the Paris area, but this hotel is certainly not the first or only hotel to cater to canines.

Clients of the Crillon Hotel are offered a dog tag engraved with the dog’s name, a sleeping basket with toy, a bone (containing fluoride), little snacks, and a daily menu cooked by the head chef.

While Le Meurice Hotel allows clients to host dog parties in the Belle Étoile suite on the eighth floor, the Four Seasons-George V offers a coverlet embroidered with the dog’s name that can be custom-ordered in advance.

In our previous article, we let our guest share their views on the benefits of opting for a vacation rental instead of a hotel when traveling abroad. However, as there  are so many choices and so many avenues, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Should you opt for a private owner or agency? If you are still undecided here are a few pointers which we hope will help.

When it comes to choosing a vacation rental in Paris, you will find an amazing array of websites advertising directly with private owners. The fees linked to these rentals are sometimes (but not always) less than agencies but they come with another kind of price…

Private owners will vouch for their property, but can sometimes be misleading prospective renters about the quality and rating it what it is worth. Parisian owners have a preconceived idea of what you would expect of a vacation rental based on their own cultural experience. Remember that apartments are considerably smaller in Europe, a lot less modern (if you choose a charming Paris abode in a medieval building, you will know what we mean) and the internet was almost non existent in most rental properties only five years ago!

On the other hand, Paris vacation rental agencies will pre-screen properties, and view them through the eyes of guests coming from North America, Australia, Canada – travelers who have very different expectations of rental properties, modernity and cleanliness. While agency fees can range from 13% to 40% (Paris Hideaways is the cheapest one on the market at the time of writing this article), an agency will be the intermediary between you and the owner in the case of any litigation that involves prices, check in conditions and amenities advertised but not present. Around-the-clock assistance and support is also something you can expect. Agencies can also offer benefits such as discount offers that private owners cannot. And an agency’s website well organised is the ideal one stop shop to design and built up your dream stay in Paris, from cooking lessons to boat cruises to finding places to shop.

Things you may have to give up

Our guests choose vacation rentals for the freedom and personality they offer and giving up the more structured environment of a hotel for the greater self-sufficiency of an apartment was not sorely missed. But as our guest likes to point out, not all rentals are designed equal. A vacation rental, which is privately owned, can be a hit or miss situation. This is where the expertise of an agency becomes very important. An agency has viewed the property you are about to select and so are able to answer any specific questions you may have.

One of our guests suggests to really delve into the details of a rental in order to have the best possible idea and dismiss any wrongly conceived notions of what a rental should be. Ask plenty of questions about anything that matters to you: sleeping arrangements, view from windows, noise level, how far it is from the metro, kitchen equipment, accessibility of the bathrooms from the bedrooms and hallways, elevator access, Wi-Fi or dial up internet, late check in or check out, nearest supermarket, etc. An agency that has done their homework will not only reply quickly but will have answers to any questions you may have.

So choosing a vacation rental will probably require a lot more research, but can be infinitely more rewarding.

If you opt for a Paris apartment you may forfeit maid service unless your owner can offer it at an extra cost. A concierge service unless you go via a booking agency that offers that service, room service and in-house restaurants will also not be available. It will also be your responsibility to leave the flat tidy. The rental will be cleaned after you leave, but some agencies may charge check out cleaning fees. Other agencies, such as Paris Hideaways, have an all-inclusive policy so long as the flat is left in a decent and tidy condition.

If you prefer not to cook on your vacation, or are allergic to any sort of tidying up on departure, a vacation rental may not be for you. Remember that you are renting someone’s home and not a hotel.

When you think about it, you will experience Paris with the Parisians not the tourist crowds. That is the best way for an immersion “à la francaise!”

An area like the 17th district will put you close enough to enjoy the Champs Elysées and Arc de Triomphe. Consider a property located near a beautiful market called Gavroche or Beausejour, a one bedroom – 2-bathroom accommodation facing parc Monceau.

As you can imagine, for a large family a single Paris hotel room will rarely provide sufficient accommodations every one. A total of 18,000 bottles – including wine from Cognac, Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux – are to be auctioned.

The sale is intended to raise 1m euros (£0.9m) to renew the cellar’s contents and ensure the restaurant keeps its Michelin star.

Its wine list is 400 pages long, with no fewer than 15,000 tipples.

Andre Terrail, who runs the restaurant – the third generation of his family to do so – said he hoped to add new wines from different parts of France, including the Loire Valley, to the cellar.

“It is a heritage my father contributed to and which I must pass on,” Mr Terrail told Agence France Presse.

“We must keep it alive and build on it,” he said of the 450,000-bottle cellar.

‘Like my children’

The sale has had wine fans licking their lips in anticipation – as all bottles were bought directly from the winemakers and have been kept in the cellar’s careful controlled conditions, making them a low-risk investment.

According to the auctioneers, some bottles were expected to reach 5,000 euros (£4,500), though others were more accessible at 10 euros a bottle.

Profits from the sale of one of the dustiest bottles to go under the hammer – a 1788 cognac expected to fetch 2,500 euros (£2,259) – will be given to charity.

La Tour d’Argent’s chief sommelier, David Ridgway, said he had bought most of the wines being auctioned off during his 30 years at the restaurant.

“Each bottle is a bit like one of my children: you see them go and you’re always sad but at the same time they’re going to make space for more, so it’s a sad occasion but a happy one at the same time,” he told the BBC.

He added that the sale was going “remarkably well” despite the recession, with some bottles fetching 30% above the original estimate.
